Commissioned by the City of Madison in 1909, The Historic City Market is a National Registry property and an important example of non-residential prairie architecture in the upper Midwest. Originally a venue away from the bustling Capitol Square for farmers to peddle their goods, the market was later made into a teen center and eventually a garage that housed city vehicles.

When the project was undertaken, the building was vacant except for its large colony of disease-carrying pigeons and was slated for demolition by the city of Madison.

This project was part of the larger Marketplace Master Development, which included the Das Kronenberg Apartments and the Dayton Row Townhomes. The Master Development represents a union of historic preservation and new construction, which in conjunction provide a variety of housing options.
