Originally constructed in the early 1960s within a then-industrial valley, Mitchell Park Domes Horticulture Conservancy (The Domes) stand as a vital architectural and educational asset to the Milwaukee community. These iconic glass structures, once described as “willful act of hope” rising from the industrial landscape, hold a significant place in the collective memory of many. Notably, the Domes represent the sole cultural institution on Milwaukee’s Near South Side.
Decades of deferred maintenance, coupled with declining admissions due to limited investment in programming and marketing, have presented significant challenges to the Domes’ long-term viability. Without dedicated external funding, demolition was a distinct possibility.
To address this critical juncture, “The Domes Reimagined” project has emerged through a strategic partnership with Milwaukee County Parks and the Friends of the Domes. This initiative presents a compelling vision: preserving the Domes’ rich history while establishing a sustainable future that strengthens the Friends’ mission of fostering meaningful connections between citizens and nature.
The Alexander Company serves as consulting developer for this project, assisting the Friends of the Domes in navigating the complexities of National Park Service approvals, securing Historic Tax Credits and New Markets Tax Credits, securing construction financing and providing guarantees, as well as financial reporting and regulatory compliance.
The project includes restoration of the failing glazing system on each of the three domes, the creation of additional public space and activities, alongside updated and modernized facilities, and the revitalization of Mitchell Park.
A strong group of local organizations are teaming up to make this project a reality. They include:
• Milwaukee County Parks: Owner, Lessor
• Friends of the Domes: Operator, Advocacy, Fundraising, Community Engagement
• The Alexander Company: Consulting Developer
• The Kubala Washatko Architects: Architect
• GRAEF: Structural, Civil and MEP Engineering, Landscape Architect
• JP Cullen: General Contractor
• McEnroe Consulting Engineers: Structural Engineering
