With several historic buildings having sat vacant in downtown Racine, Wisconsin, for a number of years, the City of Racine asked The Alexander Company to explore the possibility of renovating the buildings to revitalize downtown and provide affordable housing. Working in conjunction with The Alexander Company, the City acquired the buildings and sold them for a nominal price to a limited liability company established for the purpose of developing the buildings.
Much of the facades were covered with panels in the 1970s. Once the panels were removed, terracotta detail work of the original historic facades was discovered intact.
The rehabilitation resulted in a dramatic change to the streetscape and spurred the revitalization of downtown Racine.
