The development team that repurposed the historic Lorton Prison as a mixed-use village wants to do the same with a historic school property on Fairfax County’s Route 1 corridor.
Fairfax County has taken a step toward the redevelopment of the Old Mount Vernon High School and adjacent county-owned parcels, advancing a $399,000 contract with the Alexander Co. Inc. and Elm Street Development Inc. to master plan the 42-acre project. The county is expected to host a public hearing on the contract on Dec. 5.
Madison, Wisconsin-based Alexander Co., which specializes in historic preservation and infill projects, and McLean-based Elm Street have taken on similar projects in the past as a team: It is remaking the former Lorton Prison campus into Liberty. That, too, was the result of a public-private partnership with Fairfax County.
