A historic former shoe factory at the foot of Brewers Hill, later used as live-work space for artists, will soon reopen as a mixed-use building after over a year of renovations.
The six-story Fortress Building, 1726 N. 1st St., has 132 apartments on its upper floors and 25,000 square feet of commercial space.
The apartments, which are one- and two-bedroom units, will be available for residents starting in January, according to the building’s developer, Madison-based Alexander Co. The first units will be available for prospective renters to see starting on Thursday.
Monthly rents will start at $1,200.
The apartments have touches found in other former Milwaukee industrial buildings that have been converted to housing: hardwood floors, exposed brick walls, heavy timber columns and beams, high ceilings and large windows.
