An effort to redevelop the Mitchell Park Domes will receive $30 million from Milwaukee County over six years.
Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley and Milwaukee County Board Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson on Wednesday signed legislation to contribute to a $133 million redevelopment and restoration plan for the landmark in Milwaukee’s south side.
The project is led by the Milwaukee Domes Alliance, which is partnered with Milwaukee County Parks and The Alexander Company.
The Milwaukee Domes Alliance, formerly Friends of the Domes, will raise private donations and tax credits to secure taxpayer funding for a project that will repair the three concrete structures and build a new learning center.
For nearly a decade the county faced questions about the fate of the domes, after a piece of concrete fell from the ceiling in 2016. Conversations over capital and maintenance needs slowed during the pandemic, but in 2023 the county considered options from restoration to demolition.
On Wednesday, Milwaukee County officials seemed confident this plan would keep the domes open for coming decades.
