The planners in charge of turning six historic buildings at the Milwaukee Soldiers Home campus into veterans housing say this is the last chance these older buildings have of being adapted to a modern use.
And by “modern use,” project officials actually mean returning the structures to their original purpose: Serving veterans.
The Alexander Co., a Madison-based developer, is in charge of the efforts to restore the six buildings at the Soldiers Home’s campus, which lies near Mitchell Boulevard southwest of Miller Park. When complete, the project will have 100 housing units set aside for veterans who are either homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, and their families.
“This opportunity for redevelopment is perhaps the last and best opportunity to save those buildings and reuse them for a modern purpose,” says Joe Alexander. “We owe it to veterans who will use this facility to do the best job in its restoration.”
