GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Lidl backed out of plans to build a grocery store at the corner of South Elm Street and East Gate City Boulevard two years ago, and now, there’s new hope.

The Alexander Company has a proposal to construct a mixed income development at that site which could eventually attract a grocer.

A redevelopment commission meeting was held on Wednesday evening, and people who live nearby praised the Alexander Company for meeting with them four times to come to the current version of the proposal.

The common theme was the hope of a grocery store because there isn’t one in that area, and many people who live there have to ride the bus or call an Uber to get groceries.

The proposal includes 128 units of mixed income apartments on floors two through five of the five-story unit, which would serve both low-income community members and people who work nearby of higher incomes.
