A $21 million expansion of a facility serving homeless veterans in Milwaukee is expected to more than double the nonprofit’s capacity.
Milwaukee-based nonprofit The Center for Veterans Issues recently broke ground on a 53,000-square-foot expansion and renovation of Vets Place Central, which has provided housing, food and reintegration services to veterans for nearly 30 years.
Slated for completion at the end of 2025, the project will include a four-story addition and extensive renovations to the Vets Place building at 3330 W. Wells St., according to a Thursday press release from the organization.
The expansion will increase the facility’s capacity to 81 single rooms, up from 32. The bulk of those units will allow veterans to reside for up to two years, and roughly a dozen rooms will provide longer-term housing, according to an organization spokesperson.
Renovations will also enhance the facility’s community spaces for wraparound supportive services, and include amenities such as a club room, cafeteria, fitness center, library and outdoor patio.
