The iconic Old Main building in Milwaukee’s Soldiers Home will welcome residents to its new affordable apartments in March, marking the first time it has been occupied in more than three decades.

The Alexander Co. is leading the restoration and project co-developer with the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee, which will take the lead on operating the apartments. Joseph Alexander, president of Alexander Co., helped lead a tour through the Solders Home buildings on Thursday. See the attached slideshow for a look at the work in progress — and some views from before the rehabilitation began.

“The building is night and day from what it looked like a year ago,” Alexander said. “It is beautiful and it is what everybody hoped it would be and was confident it could be even though it is 150 years old.”

The 80 apartments in Old Main are for veterans who are experiencing chronic homelessness, and will offer services to support those residents. It is part of a $40 million restoration of six historic buildings in this post-Civil War veterans campus, which is a national landmark.
