Contractors have been touring through the Old Main building at the historic Milwaukee Soldiers Home campus, planning for a late 2017 start on its restoration.
Old Main is about 150 years old, and was used as a long-term care center for veterans until shutting down in 1989. See inside the long-shuttered building in the attached slideshow, and learn more about the plan to restore it.
Old Main is the largest structure within the Soldiers Home campus, located north of the Clement J. Zablocki Medical Center on West National Avenue in Milwaukee. Once rehabbed, the building will have 80 apartments for veterans, most of which will be one-bedroom units.
The Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee and The Alexander Co. Inc. of Madison are leading the project. The rehabbed building will have new community rooms, a fitness center and several spaces where the Center for Veterans Issues will provide services to residents.
