Efforts to continue redeveloping Milwaukee’s historic Soldiers Home complex are expanding to three more buildings.
The Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking proposals from developers to rehabilitate what are now vacant buildings in the Soldiers Home National Historic Landmark District.
The buildings are on or near Mitchell Boulevard, between I-94 and West National Avenue, on the grounds of the Zablocki Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
The request for proposals comes as a fundraising campaign is being completed to help pay for a $40 million conversion of the Soldiers Home district’s Old Main building and other nearby buildings into veterans apartments.
Madison-based Alexander Co. expects to begin that work by March and complete the development by fall 2020.
